TEARS

When canvas threads are torn, the paint layer loosens and chips off, the ground layer is exposed, the surrounding canvas distorts.  The entire canvas begins a process of stretching and shrinking.  The paint layer cracks.  Once open to air and moisture, the paint layer begins to flake off.
Addressing tears early is the best strategy.
